Sir John Vanbrugh began the design and layout of Castle Howard in 1699. Work on the gardens started in 1703. During the 18th century extensive work was carried out throughout the grounds.

Castle Howard is not National Trust. It is privately owned. However, it is part of the Historic Houses Association which, for two adults costs around 75 pounds I think to join. This gives access to most of the Historic Houses in the Association and is well worth it.
