What is URM medical school?
The Association of American Colleges (AAMC) defines URM status applicants as “those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.” There are four groups that are defined as URM: Black/African American. Mexican American.
Does URM help for medical school?
Many students don’t want to make a fuss about their ethnicity. It can be helpful to disclose this information – especially if you are considered a URM. It will only help your application. Research has revealed that the more diverse a student’s medical class is, the better his or her training in cultural competence.

Is LGBT URM law school?
No. LGBT is not considered URM for admissions. Only African-American/Mexican-American and possibly Puerto Rican are considered URM for law school admissions purposes. A good diversity statement may help your cause, but you won’t get the bump people generally associate with URM.

Since 2018, the American Medical Association (AMA) added sexual orientation and gender identity as options for members to include on demographic profiles. So far, 15,000 students and doctors have chosen to include this information, and about 4% identify as LGBTQ.
