When was Beckton built?
Beckton Gas Works was built in 1868 on a 500-acre site on the north bank of the Thames at Gallions Reach, known as the East Ham Levels. Such was the importance of the plant that the area of Beckton was named after the chairman of the Gas Light and Coke Company Simon Adams Beck.
Who owned Beckton ski slope?
At its peak Beckton had employed 4,500 people, but by the late 1970s only 100 employees remained. After closure the residual site passed to British Gas and Transco. The works lay within the London Docklands area and parts were redeveloped by the London Docklands Development Corporation.
