How do Reputations work in wow?

Reputation (rep) is gained through killing a faction’s enemies and completing quests to assist a particular group. There are many reasons why we may increase or decrease reputations. You may be asked to do so to as a quest objective or to gain particular rewards.

Why do you need revered TBC?

All dungeon mobs give some kind of reputation in TBC, and you want that rep at revered at least, to get access to heroic version of dungeon. Reputation from regular mobs stops at Honored, so the smart thing to do is grind dungeons until Honored, then do relevant quests.
