What is an urban ore?
Urban Ore has an extensive collection of reuse / salvaged building materials, toilets, windows, doors, sinks, furniture, art supplies, and odds and ends diverted from the landfill: reused merchandise. They often have 55 gallon drums for sale (approx. $10-$12) which can be used for rainwater catchment.

Urban Ore has been on a mission to rescue every-day objects and treasures from landfills since it was first established in 1980. Dan Knapp, who co-owns the business with his wife Mary Lou Van Deventer, describes it as one of the city’s largest zero-waste initiatives.
Does Urban Ore buy?
Appliances. We may accept old gas stoves and some small kitchen appliances if they are complete, rust free, and working. We can also accept metal appliances for dismantling into scrap, but we may charge a drop off fee (see above).
What does Urban Ore accept?
WE DO ACCEPT: electronics, most reuseable goods, furniture, housewares, arts/media supplies etc. They also accept a wide variety of building supplies and materials. They will not accept any built-in appliances or mattresses.
Where can I recycle Styrofoam Berkeley?

A nonprofit organization tried to salvage but failed. In 1980 Urban Ore rose from its ashes and started recovering and trading resources as a scavenger organization. Its only assets were permission to exist and a place to put things down.

What plastic numbers are recyclable in Berkeley?

Why is glass no longer recyclable?
Note: Drinking glasses, glass objects, and window glass cannot be placed with recyclable glass because they have different chemical properties and melt at different temperatures than the recyclable bottles and containers. Broken drinking glass goes into the trash stream.

I’ve been going to Urban Ore for the last 10 years and am now officially giving up on this place. It used to be a place to buy reasonably priced items and full of interesting recycled items. Not anymore. About 2/3 of the items should be thrown in a dumpster!
