Does hospice mean the end is near?
The short answer to this question is no. In order to qualify for hospice care, your loved one must have received a prognosis of life expectancy of six months or less from their doctor. This doesn’t mean they are going to die in that time. It just means the doctor feels they could possibly pass away within six months.
How long are you expected to live on hospice?
You are eligible for hospice care if you likely have 6 months or less to live (some insurers or state Medicaid agencies cover hospice for a full year). Unfortunately, most people don’t receive hospice care until the final weeks or even days of life, possibly missing out on months of helpful care and quality time.
Is hospice the last resort?
Hospice is not a last resort. When medical treatments can no longer cure a disease, hospice professionals can do many things to control pain, reduce anxiety, offer spiritual and emotional support, and improve quality of life for terminally ill people and their families.
What are the four levels of hospice care?
Every Medicare-certified hospice provider must provide these four levels of care:
- Hospice Care at Home. VITAS supports patients and families who choose hospice care at home, wherever home is.
- Continuous Hospice Care.
- Inpatient Hospice Care.
- Respite Care.
