How do I read my contact lens prescription?
Regular Prescription
- Eye – Which eyes the prescription line item is for.
- SPH – Sphere (this can also be referred to as Power or PWR)
- BC – Base Curve (usually a number between 8 and 10)
- DIA – Diameter (usually a number between 13 and 15)

Yes, you can take your prescription to another optician and buy glasses from another practice. An optician is obliged to provide you with the written prescription following the eye examination. By law, the prescription must provide the basic results of the eye examination.
Can I use an expired contact lens prescription?
While wearing contacts past their prescription expiration date won’t physically harm your eyes, it may adversely impact your vision. Your doctor sets the prescription expiration date for the last date that you’ll be able to order contacts with that prescription.

Our colored contacts with prescription are sold in pairs of the same corrective strength. So, if your eyes require different prescriptions, you’ll want to order two boxes.
Is the power of contact lenses the same as the prescription?
Even the power of the lenses is generally not the same as in your eyeglass prescription. This is because: Regular soft contacts do not correct for your astigmatism, but your eye doctor will typically try to partially correct for it by changing the power of the lens. Your prescription will also contain an expiration date.
Can you substitute a prescription for a contact lens?
Contact lens prescriptions are brand specific and cannot be substituted. National brands are available to be purchased anywhere, so requesting this in advance will make it easier to fill your prescription later. Doctors are legally required to provide a written copy of your prescription upon request.
