Are Onyx hubs worth it?
It works brilliantly for a rear bicycle hub. At the cost of a set of Onyx hubs, it should work brilliantly. Again it’s a premium build. If you want the ultimate experience of instant engagement and silent trails being one with just the sounds of nature the Onyx is the way to go.
Are freehub bodies interchangeable?
Most Shimano Freehub bodies are interchangeable. The exceptions are: FH-7850 and FH-7900 Dura-Ace bodies, which have returned to a splined attachment between Freehub body and hub shell, but it is larger than the usual one. It is similar but not interchangeable between these two models.
Can you put any freehub body on any hub?
Almost always, the answer is no, there is no interchangeability between different brands – and often limited interchangeability within a brand.

Onyx oftentimes builds hubs by hand, per order, will customize the color and offers free laser etching of a logo or a name. The target weight of the new hubs is 320 grams, where the 12x142mm hub currently weighs 414 grams.
Can you swap Freehubs?
Each one uses a unique spline interface to the cassette. Each brand and model of hubs also uses its own freehub/driver to hub interface. If you need to change your freehub/driver, you will need to get the same brand and model. You cannot mix-n-match freehub/drivers from different brands.
How long should a freehub last?
I had them last anywhere between two weeks and three months (170 miles per week). Eventually I gave up and bought a Shimano R500 rear wheel for £50 and six months later the freehub is still fine. If you’re degreasing the cassette mounted to the bike, you’re probably washing the grease out of the free hub.

Where are Onyx hubs made?

For one, Onyx’s hubs are quite expensive, coming in around $650 for a set. However, they are manufactured in Minnesota and use the highest grade materials, including stock ceramic bearings.
Can a Nobl hub be converted to an onyx hub?
To convert a NOBL or Onyx rear hub between HG or XD drivetrains, you’ll need a conversion kit. Each kit comes with the freehub specific sized axle, the freehub body and the corresponding end cap. The alloy freehubs are considerably lighter than the steel versions (45g for XD, 71g for HG) and are recommended for riders under 200lbs.
