How can I make my roof rafters stronger?
Reinforce the Trusses
- Apply construction adhesive along the edge of the truss to strengthen the connection to the plywood roof deck.
- Stiffen trusses by joining them with 2x4s running from one end of the house to the other.
- Brace gable ends with diagonal 2x4s.
- Connect trusses to walls with hurricane tiedowns.
Can you use screws for rafters?
Our inspectors have seen a disturbing trend of late: people using wood or deck screws when building structural elements. This means ordinary wood screws cannot be used to attach rafters to top plates, or joists to beams.
Can I use joist hangers for rafters?
Joist hangers can hang rafters from a ledger, but, for sloping rafters, notch them or use special rafter hangers. If rafters will sit on top of a ledger, attach them with seismic anchors as you would attach rafters to a beam.
