How do Kadee Uncouplers work?
Kadee® Magne-Matic® Couplers are designed so it takes two things to uncouple them: a magnetic uncoupler and slack between the couplers. The uncoupling is accomplished over a magnetic uncoupler, either permanent or electrical, mounted between the rails, under the track, or lowered into the road bed (electrical).

Uncoupling magnets work by pulling aside steel pins under the couplers. To use, spot the couplers directly above the magnet. The Couplers must be slack, so you might have to back up slightly to ease the tension. The couplers will begin to separate as Fig 1 shows.

- Stop with the couplers over an uncoupler and back up slightly with the couplers still over the uncoupler, allowing slack to occur between couplers.
- Pull forward bringing coupler off the uncoupler.
- Back up, pushing the car(s) to the desired location.
How do you uncouple knuckle couplers?
To uncouple cars simply insert the “pic” of your choice between the knuckles of cars and twist counterclockwise to open the couplers and push them to the side. While holding the couplers open with the “pic”, pull the rest of the train away from the car being left.
How do you manually uncouple Kadee couplers?
To manual uncouple the #118 & #119 coupler with the pointed end of the #241 “Dual Tool”, first push the cars together where the coupler knuckles compress against each other, insert the pointed end against the “outside” of the hooked tip of the knuckle as illustrated (the knuckle is the moving part of the coupler head).
How do knuckle couplers work?

The couplers utilize a split shank arrangement whereby the entire coupler separates to open. The centering springs, cast onto the end of the shanks, also close the knuckle.
