What is the history of The Shard?

The Shard was designed by famed architect Renzo Piano in conjunction with Broadway Malyan. Piano started the design in 2000 under contract by Irvine Sellar. Sellar is a property developer in London that was intent on redeveloping the Southwark Towers that once inhabited the space upon which the Shard now stands.

What foundations were used for the Shard?

Foundation construction began with the sinking of bored piles, 1.5m and 1.8m in diameter, up to 53m deep. The piles are cased through the alluvium and gravels, while bentonite grout supports the bores in the water-bearing Lambeth Group beds and Thanet Sands.
