How do you read a military grid reference?
An example of an MGRS coordinate, or grid reference, would be 4QFJ12345678, which consists of three parts:
- 4Q (grid zone designator, GZD)
- FJ (the 100,000-meter square identifier)
- 12345678 (numerical location; easting is 1234 and northing is 5678, in this case specifying a location with 10 m resolution)
What coordinate system does the military use?
Two systems are marked on National Topographic System (NTS) maps for identifying points with reference to the rectangular grid: Civilian UTM Grid Reference System and Military Grid Reference System described below.
How do you convert degrees to grid references?
- convert (geodetic) latitude/longitude to geocentric cartesian coordinates: e² = (a²−b²) / a² eccentricity of source ellipsoid (= 2·f − f²) ν = a / √(1 − e² · sin²φ)
- apply Helmert transform. The 7-parameter Helmert transform is given by: x. ′
- convert cartesian co-ordinates back to latitude/longitude.
How accurate is a 4 digit grid coordinate?
4 digits – 2306 – locates a point with a precision of 1,000-meters (a neighborhood size area).
How accurate is a 8 digit grid coordinate?
4 digits – 2306 – locates a point with a precision of 1,000-meters (a neighborhood size area). 6 digits – 234064 – locates a point with a precision of 100-meters (a soccer field size area). 8 digits – 23480647 – locates a point with a precision of 10-meters (the size of a modest home).
How do you calculate grid reference?
Grid references
- First, find the four-figure grid reference but leave a space after the first two digits.
- Estimate or measure how many tenths across the grid square your symbol lies.
- Next, estimate how many tenths up the grid square your symbol lies.
- You now have a six figure grid reference.
What is an 8 figure grid reference?
An 8 figure grid reference consists of 2 groups of 4 numbers (Eastings and Northings). If your location is to the West of the vertical fine line and south of the horizontal fine line then the fourth figure (Easting), and eighth figure (Northing) of your 8 figure grid reference will be between 0 and 4.
