How deep should my sand bed be?

A deep sand bed is typically 6″ to 8″ deep. Within the first 2″ to 3″, aerobic bacteria will thrive and help breakdown waste and produce nitrates. As you go deeper into the sand bad, the water will be less oxygenated and therefore anaerobic bacteria will thrive.
Does deep sand bed work?

Is there such thing as sand bed?
So what I love, love, love about deep sand beds is the surface area for both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to live and grow. Deep within my sand bed live those anaerobic bacteria. And they remove NITRATE directly from the water. That means an extra step you can’t get with a shallower substrate level (or a bare tank).
