Why is be the match important?
Why is there a need for people to join the Be The Match Registry? Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, sickle cell anemia or other life-threatening diseases depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a match to save their life. Patients need donors who are a genetic match.
Does donating bone marrow hurt?
Does donating marrow hurt? Marrow donation is done under general or regional anesthesia so the donor experiences no pain during the collection procedure. Discomfort and side effects vary from person to person. Most marrow donors experience some side effects after donation.
Is bone marrow donation painful?
Bone marrow donation is a surgical, usually outpatient procedure. You will receive anesthesia and feel no pain during the donation. Doctors use a needle to withdraw liquid marrow from the back of your pelvic bone via two small punctures.
What are the disadvantages of donating bone marrow?
Donors may experience headaches or bone and muscle pain, similar to a cold or the flu, for several days before collection. These are side effects of the filgrastim injections that disappear shortly after donation. Other common side effects are nausea, trouble sleeping and tiredness.
How does the corporate matching gift program work?
Though these programs aren’t deliberately kept secret, most donors have no idea that they exist or that the donors themselves qualify for matching gifts. Corporate matching gifts are donations made by a company to a nonprofit that an employee of said company has already supported.
What does a matching grant do for a nonprofit?
It allows a nonprofit to show a donor the in-kind support and donations of the community.
Are there any companies that match employee donations?
In mid-March of 2020 Nike created an employee giving program that included a 2:1 match by Nike on all employee donations that support nonprofit community organizations. The match was not restricted to organizations focused on providing COVID-19 relief, but focused on all community organizations in need.
How does Amgen match donations to nonprofit organizations?
In addition to donation matching, Amgen also supports employee volunteer efforts with Volunteer Services Grants to nonprofit organizations. For every 15 hours volunteered by Amgen staff, the nonprofit organization is eligible for a $500 Volunteer Service Grant from the Amgen Foundation.
