What does portal vein embolization do?
A portal vein embolization blocks blood flow to the sections of your liver using tiny particles. The tiny particles are placed into your vein through a needle and catheter (small, flexible tube) (see Figure 2). When the blood flow is blocked, the sections of your liver with the tumor will get smaller.
How do you feel after portal vein embolization?
Some patients experience nausea and vomiting as well as fever. These symptoms can be controlled with appropriate medications. A small number of patients may develop infection which can usually be controlled with antibiotics.
Can a tumor be removed from the portal vein?
In such cases, the cancer can be completely removed by major hepatectomy with resection of the ipsilateral portal vein branch containing the tumor thrombi. With this procedure, some patients may obtain long-term survival.
